African Cosmology

Astrology is often presented as a Western practice. But long before Greek philosophers mapped the heavens, African civilizations were reading the cosmos — not as distant observers, but as participants in a living, breathing universe.

The frameworks below are not relics. Theyare roots. And roots, by nature, are still alive.

Kemetic Cosmology — Ancient Egypt

At the foundation of Kemetic thought is Ma'at — cosmic order, truth, and balance. The Kemetic people understood the celestial bodies as conscious intelligences governing earthly life. The movements of the sun, moon, and stars were not metaphor — they were instruction. To live in alignment with the cosmos was to live in alignment with the divine.

Yoruba Cosmology — West Africa

The Yoruba tradition teaches that Ashe — divine energy and vital force — flows through all living things, including the stars and planets. The Orisha are cosmic intelligences, each governing a domain of human experience. Ifa, the sacred divination system, is itself a technology for reading the conversation between the cosmos and the individual soul.

Akan Cosmology — Ghana & Ivory Coast

The Akan understanding of the soul — Kra and Sunsum — holds that each person arrives in this world with a cosmic contract, a destiny agreed upon before birth. The role of the living is to remember and fulfill it. Sound familiar? It should. It is the beating heart of natal astrology.

Bakongo Cosmology — Central Africa

The Kongo Cosmogram — a circle divided by a cross — maps the continuous cycle of existence: birth, life, death, and ancestral return. Time is not linear. It is a spiral. The ancestors do not recede into the past — they circle back, informing and supporting the living. Lineage is not history. It is presence.

Dogon Cosmology — Mali

Perhaps the most astronomically sophisticated of the known African cosmological traditions, the Dogon possessed detailed knowledge of Sirius — including its invisible companion star Sirius B — centuries before Western telescopes confirmed its existence. For the Dogon, the stars were not silent. They were speaking. The Dogon were simply listening.

Bantu Cosmology —

Central & Southern Africa

Bantu ontology is organized around the principle of Vital Force — a living energy that flows from the Supreme Being through the cosmos, the ancestors, and into the living. Nothing exists in isolation. Everything is in relationship. This is the philosophical soil from which Ubuntu grows — I am because we are. The cosmos included.
